There are two primary methods of gemstone recommendation in Vedic Gemology: wear gemstones for your auspicious/benefic planets, to produce auspicious/benefic results, or wear gemstones for your malefic and troublesome planets, to try to eradicate their malefic/troublesome influences.
At Astrological Gem International, years of client research has demonstrated to us that Vedic gemstones always behave as their corresponding planets do. This means that amplifying the energy of a malefic planet can often lead to malefic results.
So if Rahu and Ketu are naturally malefic influences, what happens if you wear a powerful Rahu or Ketu gemstone? In short, Rahu and Ketu are strengthened, which can dig up unburied and unresolved karma for you to sort through. This may not necessarily be a bad thing. If you have no old karma to deal with, or if you’ve already done the work you need to do in order to neutralize this old karma, you’ll probably obtain an increase in spiritual capacity and higher intelligence from a Ketu gemstone. You may achieve fame and power with a Rahu gemstone, but beware of causing new cycles of challenging karma if you decide to sacrifice your spiritual path for a superficial/material one.
If, like most of us, you do still have unresolved karma to deal with, it will likely be left waiting for you on your front doorstep if you wear a very powerful hessonite or cat’s eye. This can be a great thing if you want to plow right through it in order to move forward with a clearer and more fulfilling life. However, it’s not very fun to obtain these kinds of results after spending hard-earned money on a precious Jyotish gemstone you bought to make your life easier. It’s also probably not a necessary process for you to go through all at once; Rahu and Ketu will present these karmic lessons to you in natural doses on their own accord, especially when prevalent in transit or when in a Rahu or Ketu mahadasha (planetary period).
Hessonite (gomed) is often worn to protect the wearer from the effects of Rahu, usually during the Rahu mahadasha. If the gemstone is extremely pure and powerful, the end result is usually that Rahu is heavily manifested in the physiology. This can cause a flareup of unresolved issues and karmic patterns like increased addiction and obsession. If you are able to maintain a great deal of personal and spiritual awareness when wearing a Rahu stone, it can help to bring about an increase in recognition, wealth, and power.
Cat’s eye is traditionally worn to appease Ketu, also usually during a Ketu mahadasha. Like with any pure Vedic gemstone, it’s our experience that wearing a Ketu stone increases Ketu’s energy inside of the wearer’s energetic field. Cat’s eye, for Ketu, often causes detachment, mysterious symptoms of hidden illness, and enlightenment through material loss. If one is spiritually in tune, detached from conventional possessions, and not particularly concerned about social empathy or connectivity with cultural norms, a Ketu stone can be great for moksha. It can speed up spiritual progress, assisting the wearer in letting go of worldly expectations and attachments in the name of establishing a greater relationship with the Divine.
The anticipated benefits of a Rahu or Ketu gemstone will be determined by how much old and unresolved karma you still need to process in this lifetime, what you plan on doing with your life from this point forward, and what qualities of life you are focusing on improving already on your own.
In general, as always, we suggest strengthening your most auspicious planets with astrological gemstones first. This leads to the highest likelihood of obtaining quick, comfortable, and enjoyable results with your investment. From there, we recommend testing Rahu stones and Ketu stones for 2-3 days if possible before the purchase is made.
