Note: The quality and purity of a gemstone is directly related to its ability to produce significant results for Jyotish. This means that a gem possessing a high degree of flawlessness, no treatments, ideal color, and optimal cut will be the most powerful.

The effects of wearing an astrological gemstone can often be anticipated. Some results are subtle or abstract but many are very specific and can be predicted when looking at the wearer’s birth chart.

Here are some things to look out for when wearing a Jyotish gemstone:

1.) An Energetic Shift
When a Jyotish gemstone is first worn, it affects the wearer’s energy field first. Our sensitive clients are able to feel this happening, sometimes sensing distinct differences in effects among the various gems they try out. Many less sensitive people are even surprised to discover that they can “feel” our stones, something I suspect is the physical sensation of one’s personal frequencies adjusting to the vibrations of the gems. I’d say it’s also a testament to the power and purity of the stones that we carry.

2.) Increased Well-Being and Sense of Purpose
Most people report a sense of peace, contentment, and excitement when they first begin wearing their Jyotish gemstone. This is followed by fresh insights, inspiration, and motivation for personal improvement and success. (Note: if you are testing a gemstone and feel uneasiness for an extended period of time, check your birth chart details as well as your recommendation for accuracy. Once it’s been confirmed that the prescription is correct, make sure the gemstone is Jyotish quality. After that, go inward for a bit and make sure you’re not simply experiencing “growing pains,” or adapting to the energy and karmic lessons of the stone you are wearing. For more on this, see #7.)

3.) Inner Change, Followed by Outer Change
They say that change begins within and it’s true: the adjustments we make to our inner world significantly affect our outer world. While we’ve heard many stories of Jyotish gemstones producing material results for people, a majority of wearers first undergo a process of personal transformation that leads to outward success down the road. For others, tangible results such as greater income, a job promotion, or greater peace in a relationship develop soon after putting on a stone. It all depends on where one is at, karmically and consciously, when the gem is first worn.

4.) Strengthening Significations of the Gemstone’s Corresponding Planet
The nine grahas of Vedic Astrology represent various qualities of the human experience on planet Earth. These qualities are enhanced by wearing a planet’s Jyotish gemstone. For example, communication is signified by Mercury so clearer speaking and writing abilities are common benefits of wearing an emerald. Emotions are a signification of the Moon so an increased sense of peace and well-being are common benefits of wearing a pearl. Jupiter is the planet of expansion and abundance, so naturally, an increase in wealth and deep personal growth are common benefits of wearing a yellow sapphire.

5.) Strengthening The Houses and Signs Ruled by the Gemstone’s Planet
Each planet in Vedic Astrology rules over one or two Zodiac signs and these signs fall into the 12 houses of the astrological chart. If we were looking at the chart of a Scorpio ascendant for example, Jupiter would rule over the 2nd and 5th houses of the chart (where Sagittarius and Pisces fall into place). So not only are Jupiter’s astrological qualities enhanced by wearing a powerful yellow sapphire but the significations of Sagittarius, Pisces, the 2nd house and 5th house become enhanced as well.

6.) Strengthening the Houses and Signs the Gemstone’s Planet is Placed In
While every planet rules over certain houses and signs, their placement in the astrological chart is also affected by wearing an astrological gemstone. For example, an Aries ascendant may have a debilitated Mars in the 4th house, leading to emotional insecurity and volatility. Strengthening Mars with a red coral will likely strengthen the significations of Mars (vitality and courage), the signs Mars rules over (1st house of self and 8th house of transformation), and the 4th house that Mars is placed in (more emotional security, domestic peace, and healing karma related to one’s mother.)

Note: If a planet is naturally auspicious but afflicted in the birth chart or placed in an inauspicious house, its corresponding gem will still work, but it tends to be more therapeutic in effect. This means that there will likely be more karmic clearing and personal evolution required to receive the most profound benefits possible from the gemstone.

7.) A Potential Adjustment Period
The use of Jyotish gemstones can affect our physiology as well as our karma. Many of us have some degree of karma to neutralize and powerful Jyotish gemstones can help accomplish this efficiently. Only you can determine how well you truly know yourself and how willing you are to grow when you first begin wearing a gem. If there are unresolved patterns in your life that are prohibiting you from living your life to the fullest, you might be asked to address these patterns when you first put on a stone. Keeping your mind and heart open to deep growth will ensure the gemstone’s effects are comfortable. The end result will be beautiful and satisfying for you and your loved ones to witness.

8.) Appreciation and Gratitude
It is, in my opinion, very important to love your astrological gemstone. Gems don’t just work for us, they work with us.  Loving your gemstone will help to activate it. It will love you right back.
