Astrological gemstones are a powerful Vedic remedy as long as they’re the proper quality and ethically sourced. That said, their potency and purity can be further enhanced by blessing, clearing, and activating them.
Below is a review of how we cleanse and charge our Jyotish gemstone inventory as well as tips you can use to purify and energize your gems (and crystals) from home.
Vedic Ceremonies (Pujas) Performed On All Of Our Gems
To activate our Jyotish gemstones, we have them blessed by a highly qualified Vedic pundit at our local Hindu temple. Elaborate planetary ceremonies, known as pujas, are performed on the appropriate day of the week for every gem type. This means that rubies for the Sun are blessed on Sunday, pearls for the Moon on Monday, and so on throughout the week.
Getting pujas done for our gemstones not only intensifies their Jyotish benefits, but we find it also helps us with our daily mission to get the right gemstones to the right people. Our gems are powerful movers of karma – selling them in accordance with the greatest good is a responsibility we have always taken seriously.
What you can do at home: Your Jyotish gemstone can be further activated by meditating with it and reciting Vedic mantras on your own. (I recommend saying them out loud if it’s comfortable for you.) Doing 108 rounds of an easy planetary mantra can be very effective. (Om Gurave Namaha is a simple Jupiter mantra, for example. They don’t need to be long or complicated to work.) While chanting, it’s ideal to focus your intentions into the gem you’re holding to further its activation. Most people do this ritual when they first receive their stone but you can do it any time.
A quick YouTube search will give you pronunciation assistance for planetary mantras. (Search for “Jupiter Mantra,” “Mercury Mantra,” etc.) If you’re not comfortable reciting the mantra out loud, you can relax and let the Vedic chanters of YouTube do it for you. Oh the wonders of modern-day technology!
Soaking Gemstones in Salt Water
Salt has been used for thousands of years as a powerful cleansing agent. Many cultures use it to purify and remove stagnant or negative energy from sacred objects. It’s common practice in the metaphysical healing world to soak rocks and crystals in salt water to cleanse them.
What you can do at home: First things first, be sure your gem can safely be soaked in water! Pearl, coral, and emerald shouldn’t be soaked for more than a few minutes. Don’t get opal wet at all. Diamonds, rubies, sapphires, topaz, garnet, amethyst, citrine, and pretty much all the other astrological gemstones can safely be soaked for as long as you’d like.
Now that our safety disclaimer is out of the way, we recommend soaking your Jyotish gemstone every year or so, or any time the stone begins to feel dull, lackluster, or heavy energetically.
It’s probably not necessary, but I like to make a particularly strong salt water solution for purifying gems. This disinfects them as an added bonus, leaving them sparkling clean and feeling fresh. If you’re soaking jewelry, give it a scrub with an old toothbrush and a quick rinse under the sink when you’re done. Your ring or pendant will look and feel like new when you put it back on.
My sense is that white sea salt is very energetically purifying and Himalayan salt (which technically comes from the mountains of Pakistan, if you were wondering) is not only clearing but also activating and invigorating due to its rich trace mineral content. I will use one type or the other, sometimes both, depending on what feels appropriate for the gemstone needing a dip.
I’ve also had success clearing gems by placing them directly on Himalayan salt lamps. This is a safe way of cleansing a pearl, or other delicate/organic stone, for an extended period of time.
Soaking Gemstones in Ganges Water
For the past 20 years, we’ve soaked every Jyotish gemstone we’ve sold in a small cup of clean Ganges water before shipping it out. It’s part of our business tradition. Water from the Ganges river has been honored for its healing abilities since the dawn of Indian culture. It has verifiable self-purifying qualities (with oxygen levels testing 25 times higher than water from any other river in the world) and we’ve worked with several psychics and intuitives over the years who can sense a distinct difference in our gems before and after a soak.
Unfortunately, the lower portion of the Ganges river suffers heavily from modern-day pollution as it runs through several major cities, but spring water collected from high in the Himalayas is still pure, clean, and sattvic. It can be purchased in small bottles from reliable sources online.
I use our Ganges spring water quite sparingly these days out of respect for the river and what it is currently enduring at the hands of modern man. Pouring a small amount of Ganges into other kinds of spring water, or into water collected from our gemstone pujas, stretches our use of the little bottles we order.
What you can do at home: If you have a live running spring or an ocean nearby, consider yourself lucky and go submerse your gems for a moment. (Don’t drop them!) Otherwise, any high quality fresh spring water is effective for soaking, especially once it’s mixed with salt. You can also try soaking the stones overnight on a windowsill so they get exposed to the light of a full or waxing moon, a subtle but powerful frequency of illumination.
A Bonus Experiment: Soaking Gemstones in ORMUS
This is a recent addition to our soaking regimen: adding a few drops of ORMUS to our gem water. ORMUS stands for “Orbitally Rearranged Monoatomic Elements” and contains gold, silver, platinum, and other conductive elements in a high-spinning monoatomic state. ORMUS is reported to have great healing power when ingested and also allegedly works wonders on the health and vigor of plants. While I cannot say for certain if it helps to activate gemstones, as I have yet to do any official tests, I will say that these days I distinctly notice (and miss it) when I don’t add it to our soaking water, so I put a few drops in on a regular basis now.
What about Soaking Gems in Milk?
It’s commonplace in Vedic tradition to soak gemstones in milk. This won’t harm most gems, but it will ruin your red coral, possibly contaminate your pearl, and even run the risk of damaging your emerald. Do not soak these gemstone types in milk. We have had many customers turn their red coral white by soaking it in milk overnight.
Other gems will not be harmed by milk but I think it’s worth noting that commercial, non-organic, ultra-pasteurized milk from factory farms is probably not the same pure and sattvic liquid that was used ceremonially in ancient India. Pasture-raised cows, raised on family farms, is likely produce a more energetically uplifting product. If you feel the need to soak your gems in milk I’d personally suggest finding a good quality source of dairy for doing so.
What about smudging gemstones with sage or incense?
Go for it! Sage is great stuff, I burn it at home and in at our office as needed. Energetically I’m undecided on whether or not it does much to clear and purify a gemstone but it certainly won’t harm anything. It’s worth trying on pearl and coral in lieu of soaking it.
Activating Gemstones with a Gemstone “Charger”
Last year we invested in a very heavy gold plated disc, about 12″ in diameter, with a Metatron’s Cube carved across the top. (The Metatron’s Cube is an ancient sacred geometric symbol, found throughout the world, said to hold all possible patterns for the creation of physical reality within its design.)
This disc was made and blessed by a world famous healer with the intention of “charging” precious gemstones specifically. We had no idea what to expect when we first bought it, or what it even meant to charge a gemstone (I thought we invested in some sort of electrical charger), but ran several tests once it arrived and found it to be surprisingly effective. All we have to do is put a gem (or piece of jewelry) on the charger for a few minutes and it’s good to go. We’ve unanimously agreed that emeralds appear more vivid after a charge on multiple occasions and find that the turnaround on astrological results is sped up when we use it on behalf of a client. These chargers are unfortunately no longer being made so we’re grateful to have the one that we do.
If a client has specific qualities or desires they’d like to charge their gemstone with, I’ll write them down on a small piece of paper and stack it along with Vedic symbols and sacred images onto the charger for a very specific imprint. I’ve also noticed that clients report feeling their gemstones more strongly when they first receive them since we’ve begun charging all of our gems in addition to soaking them.
What you can do at home: We’ve recently begun sending out copper plates containing sacred yantras to our gemstone customers, asking them to experiment with making their own personal chargers so we can collect feedback on how that works. I’ll post an update when I gather enough results to form a consensus on their impact, but I really like copper plates personally and use them in the office as well as in my home.
If you want to try working with a copper plate as a gemstone charger, I’d suggest ordering one with the Sri Yantra to start. (You can find them on Amazon for $10.) The Sri Yantra is an extremely powerful symbol, used for over ten thousand years, containing highly advanced mathematical concepts that still fascinate scientists to this day.
Write your gemstone intentions on a piece of paper, put it under a copper activator, and meditate with the gem on the plate or keep them on your altar overnight. See if you can get an imprint into your gemstone for its intended results.
Copper is a powerful conductive element that has been used medicinally for thousands of years, stimulating and moving energy both physically and metaphysically. It’s a great metal to inscribe sacred geometrical symbols on, and to use an activator, for this reason. (3D copper pyramids can also be purchased online for the purpose of activating gems, something I look forward to experimenting with in the near future, I’ll keep you posted on how that goes.)
