Powerful Rahu & Ketu Gemstones: Benefits & Side Effects

There are two main methods of gemstone recommendation in Vedic Astrology. One method is to prescribe gemstones for your most benefic planets in order to produce auspicious results. The other method, which we do not recommend, is to wear gemstones for your malefic planets in an attempt to appease them or lessen their influence.

Listening to client feedback over the past 20 years has made it clear to us that astrological gemstones behave like their corresponding planets do. This means that amplifying the energy of a malefic planet can often lead to malefic results.

So if Rahu and Ketu produce naturally malefic (challenging) influences in Jyotish, what happens if you wear a powerful Rahu or Ketu gemstone?

In short, the effects of Rahu and Ketu are strengthened. This can dig up buried and unresolved karma for you to sort through. If you’re ready to work with the depths of your shadow self, or if you’ve already sorted through limiting attachments to the material world, you’ll probably obtain an increase in spiritual capacity and heightened intuitive ability from wearing a Ketu gemstone. You may achieve fame and power with a Rahu gemstone, but beware of causing new cycles of challenging karma if you decide to sacrifice your spiritual path for an overly superficial one.

That said, it’s not always very fun to obtain these kinds of results after spending hard-earned money on a Jyotish gemstone you bought to make your life easier. It’s also probably not a necessary process for you to go through all at once: Rahu and Ketu usually present these karmic lessons to you in natural doses on their own accord, especially when prevalent in transit or during a Rahu or Ketu mahadasha. (A dasha is a significant planetary cycle in Vedic Astrology. You can read more about whether or not you should wear a gemstone for your mahadasha here.)

Hessonite (gomed) is often worn to “protect” the wearer from the effects of Rahu. However, if the gemstone is pure and powerful, the end result is actually that the energy of Rahu is manifested more than it is repressed. If one is not careful, this can cause a flareup of addictive or compulsive behavior, emotional whirlwinds relating to lower-level attachments, or fixation on actions and events that do not ultimately serve the greatest good. If you are able to maintain a great deal of personal and spiritual awareness when wearing a hessonite, it can help to bring about an increase in recognition, wealth, and power.

Cat’s eye is traditionally worn to appease Ketu, but we can’t emphasize enough that wearing a cat’s eye only increases Ketu’s karmic influence. This runs the risk of promoting excessive detachment, symptoms of mysterious illness, and enlightenment by way of deep loss. If one is spiritually tuned in and not particularly concerned about social integration or connection with cultural norms, a Ketu stone can be great for attaining moksha. It can speed up spiritual progress, assisting the wearer in letting go of worldly expectations and attachments in the name of establishing a greater relationship with the Divine.

The overall effects of a Rahu or Ketu gemstone will be determined by how much unresolved karma you need to neutralize in this lifetime, what you plan on doing with your life from this point forward, and what values you are focusing on cultivating already.

As always, we suggest strengthening your most auspicious planets with astrological gemstones first. This leads to the highest likelihood of obtaining quick, comfortable, and enjoyable results with your investment. From there, we recommend testing Rahu stones and Ketu stones for 2-3 days if possible before the purchase is officially made.

    1. I agree. During Ketu dasa I made the mistake of wearing a Ketu gem based on an inaccurate vedic astrology reading. Bad idea. At first my energy felt enlivened. Then I started feeling bad. I don’t remember having anything bad happen. But I felt like something was wrong and something bad was going to happen. I just started feeling like I needed to get rid of the stone quickly, so I sold it back to the seller. They didn’t want it back and charged me a re-stocking fee. I think they went out of business. For the record, I am a Gemini ascendant with Ketu and Saturn in my 8th house aspected by Mars. The astrologer assumed everyone should wear a gemstone for the Dasa Lord which is totally wrong. Individual needs must be closely analyzed. I also had a bad experience with a Rahu stone that I sold to someone else. I can’t prove it, but it might have given me fibroids. (Rahu and Mars are in my second house in Cancer.) Thus, I think Ketu and Rahu stones should be chosen with extreme caution.

    1. Hi Rajesh, Saturn stones should be worn with caution. Emerald and diamond are generally more straightforward in their results but it’s best to make sure they’re auspicious planets for you to strengthen before investing. Thanks!

  1. You are correct. I wore both Rahu and Ketu stones at different points of my life and know firsthand how they speed up the karmic effects. One should deliberate a hundred times before wearing them.

  2. […] Just last week, a lady called me who had found us through a Google search. Her husband wanted a divorce and unfortunately she didn’t, so her astrologer suggested she get a very large cat’s eye (the gemstone for Ketu). Ketu is generally interpreted as a malefic or inauspicious influence, responsible for separations and unexpected hardships. Many astrologers make the mistake of recommending a cat’s eye to eliminate the effects of Ketu but the opposite actually happens when its gemstone is worn. I only sell a cat’s eye if I’m certain a customer really wants to strengthen Ketu in their lives. Most people don’t. (Read more about Rahu and Ketu gemstones here.) […]
